Water Sports in the Maldives

Many resorts offer excellent water sports facilities. In some resorts there are additional fees for tuition and use of facilities and equipment, so before you embark on your trip, check out prices at the resort you are planning on staying with. If you are planning on doing a lot of the activities, you might want to rethink where you will be staying as some resorts do offer guests free use of these facilities.

Windsurfing

Windsurfing is basically a cross between surfing and sailing. You stand on a board, like a surfer, but the board has a sail on it. You steer by tilting the mast and sail. The breeze and the wind movement in the bigger lagoons that surround most of the islands are ideal for windsurfing.

Snorkeling

This is a good activity for families and for those who are afraid of scuba diving but still want to enjoy the underwater beauty all around them. All you need are a mask and fins. And the best part is that you don’t even need to be in water deeper than you knees or ankles if that’s what you want. Snorkeling is the perfect way to explore the underwater world with your children.

Water Skiing

With miles of water around you, water skiing beckons many to try it. A lot of the resorts have their own speed boats and skis for rent on per hour basis. If you need water skiing instruction, ask if they have instructors available to give you lessons.

Wave Surfing

Some of the best surfing in the world is in the Maldives. The best waves run from March to October, with the biggest swells likely to occur in June, July, and August. The waves in the Maldives generally ranges in size from four to eight feet, however bigger waves have been seen. A large range of reef breaks exist ranging in intensity from quite smooth and enjoyable walls to hardier hollow pits.

The best way to get the most out of a surfing trip in the Maldives is to take a surf charter and head south. Surfing safari operators have highly dedicated staff. They love to see you enjoy the best possible holiday experience and will help anyway they can to make it so.

All surfers must understand that they have to be responsible for their safety. Inexperienced an immature moves may end up in injuries or accidents. So realize that it may not just be yourself you hurt if you are inattentive, but others too.

Head for a point where the prevailing breeze is offshore. Blowing into the waves, the winds will make them stand up nicely giving hollow tubes to cut through. For onshore winds, get an early start.

For the experienced and the bold, the surf points in Huvadhoo Atoll is a real challenge. These waves are young and untouched. Indeed this is the single biggest natural Atoll in the Maldives and lies at the edge of a two and half degree channel, which runs across Maldives.

The barriers to the Huvadhoo Atoll are the travel distance and accommodations. There are no tourist resorts yet in this atoll. However two luxury live-aboards frequent the area, ‘Sultan of Madivaru' and ‘Sultan of Maldives' teams up to produce the ultimate floating resort for you.
