How To Choose The Right Resort For You In The Maldives

The Maldives is a destination to paradise, and while many of the resorts are fairly spendy, there are many resorts that offer visitors a chance to see, taste, and feel all that the Maldives has to offer. Picking the right resort destination is key to your enjoyment.

Here are a few things to consider when deciding on a Maldives resort:

  • Determine your budget ahead of time as this will help you determine the list of resorts that you have to pick from.
  • Take some time and discover why you are drawn to a vacation in the Maldives. Think about what activities you would like to participate in and your experience in each.  For instance, the Maldives is a great place for diving – if you’re going to be spending a lot of time diving then you must be aware that different resorts have different standards in their diving facilities. Some resorts are also naturally better for divers than others. You’ll want to choose a package with a resort that focuses on diving. And don’t worry, it’s possible to get diving packages that you don’t have to spend a fortune on additional diving expenses on a daily basis. Do some investigation in this area. If you are an active person, you’ll probably want a resort that offers a wealth of activities and entertainment. If you are looking for just relaxation, you may be looking for a resort with deluxe spa facilities that offers massages and sea wraps as you laze by the sand gazing at the crystal blue waters.
  • Look at the total package and what it offers. You may think that most resorts are too expensive with an all inclusive price. But if you stay at a bed and breakfast facility, it may appear to be a better price at first, but you have to add in the food and drink that you will be paying and additional charge for, not to mention additional activities that you may want to participate in. A bed and breakfast or hotel room may in fact be more expensive than an all inclusive package.
  • Full board may be a good choice in many cases as all meals are provided, although the guest still has to pay for drinks, and that may be a good choice for those who do not drink too much alcohol. If on the other hand you enjoy a tipple or five then the All Inclusive option may well be the optimum package for you as drinks can be sinfully expensive at most resorts.
  • Find out what clientele frequents the resort. Some resorts may cater to specific nationalities – for example predominantly Italian, German or Japanese clientele. This may be a problem if you like to mingle but are unable to speak the dominant language. On the other hand, if you want to spend time reading a book or lying on the beach, this might be the perfect foil for deflecting chatterers.
  • Most resorts offer a wide range in types of accommodations. Only you can decide which accommodations are best for you. For example, a standard beach villa would be typically a few feet from the sea while a water villa is located in the waters itself. Water villas can be beautiful and offer the chance to see the marine life swim by while looking from the window – but they are considerably more costly.
  • If you are vacationing with children you should try and choose a resort with a kids club if possible. Not only will you enjoy the time you spend in the Maldives more, but so will the children when they have a world that they can relate to and stay entertained.
  • The capital city, Male, is a wondrous excursion in itself. If you want to spend a day exploring Male then you may not want to choose a resort that is closer to the city. Some resorts do not offer this as a day trip so you may want to check this prior to booking.
  • You may also want to consider when during the year you wish to go. The best time regarding the weather to go between December and April when there is the most sunshine and the least rain. You might need to remember that during these peak times, prices tend to be far higher.
  • Some resorts, even some of the pricey ones, may not offer a personal TV in the rooms. This can be intentional to promote the “no news, no shoes” feel of the island. Few people come to the Maldives to watch TV but if this is a comfort that you simply cannot live without then check with your travel agent before booking to see if your chosen resort offers one.
  • Consider the look, feel and architecture of your lodging. Some can be more modern, almost like a standard hotel room while others are traditionally built with thatched roofs and even a partially open-air bathroom, or you may want a space with a more Zen appeal to it.
  • Romantics and honeymooners may find that some of the smaller islands are more cozy, intimate and quiet while the larger ones may have more of a party feel to them and are more crowded.
  • Knowing what you are going on vacation to do and experience beforehand, will help you in picking just the right resort or vacation spot on the Maldives.
